Wadeye Men's Shed - DVAP in Action

As an action item in the Wadeye Men’s Shed Domestic Violence Action Plan (DVAP), the Men’s Shed Coordinator (Thamarrurr Development Corporation) arranged an "On Country Wellness Camp" and invited NO MORE to actively participate by leading a dedicated men's discussion session. The camp was held at Yederr (Red Cliff), approximately 1.5 hours' drive north of Wadeye. The camp was well attended, with over 40 men participating. Attendees included members of the Healthy Homes CDP crew, the Wadeye Men’s Shed, other community members, and representatives from the North Australian Family Legal Aid Service. There was a strong sense of excitement and enthusiasm among the men as everyone pitched in to help prepare for the camp. The atmosphere on arrival at Yederr was one of happiness and calm, with many expressing a deep sense of pride and connection to being on country.

NO MORE Worker,  Adrian Lantjin,  led the men’s education session in Murrinh-Patha, focusing on themes of family leadership and being a strong role model within the community. The session incorporated the Family Coping Mat and We-Ali cards to guide discussion around wellness, support networks, and self-reflection. The men actively engaged in conversations about the impacts of domestic and family violence (DFV) on women and children, and why creating peace and safety in the family home is everyone’s responsibility. They explored practical actions they could take individually and collectively to support this goal.

Feedback from participants was overwhelmingly positive. Many shared that they felt uplifted, connected, and very happy to be spending time together on country. The camp provided a safe and supportive environment for open discussion, cultural connection, and personal growth. During the camp men delivered passionate speeches that spoke directly to the issues being experienced. The men drew on local cultural references and community-specific challenges to encourage the men to support each other and make strong positive differences in their homes and community.

The following video is a beautiful reflection of the camp.
