Understanding Domestic and Family Violence (DFV)
Domestic and family violence is everyone's business.
Domestic and family violence doesn't just affect individuals - it impacts, families, communities and future generations. It's more than physical violence. DFV includes verbal, emotional, financial, sexual, psychological, cultural and spiritual abuse.
Violence and disrespect have no place in our homes, sports clubs, or workplaces. Ending violence starts with understanding that it is preventable, and each one of us has a role to play.
What can I do?
At NO MORE we believe change starts with action. Whether big or small, your actions make a difference. Here's how you can get started:
- Call out disrespect - If you hear language or behaviour that disrespects women or others, say something. Show that it's not acceptable. Silence allows harmful behaviours to continue.
- Support your mates and family - Be someone people can tun to. Ask "are you okay?" listen without judgement. Encourage them to get help if they need it.
- Be a role model - Set the example in how you treat people. Your actions - on and off the field, at work, or at home - influence those around you.
- Start conversations - Talk about domestic and family violence prevention in your club, school, workplace, and family. When we talk, we learn. And when we learn, we can do better.
Community Led Actions: Stronger Together
Change happens when communities come together. Across the Northern Territory, communities, sports, teams, schools, and workplaces are taking action to say NO MORE.
Here's how communities are making a difference:
- Hosting NO MORE marches and rallies
- Signing team and workplace Domestic Violence Action Plans
- Running workshops and education sessions
- Creating safe spaces for people to speak out
- Standing side by side with survivors and showing support
When communities, lead the change, violence and disrespect are challenged, and safer futures are built.
